Sleep better
Restorative Rest as the Cornerstone of Well-being. What Science Understands Today about Sleep and the Endocannabinoid System.
The Science of Sleep
The Endocannabinoid System and Sleep
Sleep is regulated by a complex orchestra of neurotransmitters—GABA, serotonin, adenosine, melatonin—and by circadian rhythms. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is actively involved: it has CB1 receptors in key brain areas for the sleep-wake cycle, such as the hypothalamus and brainstem.
What the research says
A retrospective study by Shannon et al. (2019), published in The Permanente Journal with 72 patients, found that 66.7% of participants with sleep problems reported improvement in subjective scores during the first month. It was an observational study without a placebo group; effects vary among individuals.
How to use it in your routine
Sublingual oils are usually the preferred option: they are taken 30-60 min before bedtime so that absorption coincides with the time one starts to fall asleep. The most prudent rule: start with low doses (10-15 mg) and increase every 3-7 days. Combinations with melatonin, valerian, or passionflower are popular.
