The idea that humans have so many cannabinoid receptors due to an extraterrestrial connection is an interesting, and perhaps highly fanciful, theory. However, we can explore the theory and its context objectively.
The "enormous" Cannabinoid Receptor Network
Cannabinoid receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system in the human body. This system plays a crucial role in regulating a variety of physiological processes, including appetite, pain, mood, and memory . The presence of these receptors is not unique to humans; they are found in many animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Cannabinoid receptors are found in various parts of the body and have different functions depending on their location.
The 2 main cannabinoid receptors:
Cannabinoid Receptor Type 1 (CB1):
Discovered in: 1990.
Function : Involved in the modulation of pain, appetite, memory and mood.
- Brain : In the brain, it is found mainly in areas that regulate pain, memory, appetite, and mood, such as the hippocampus, neocortex, cerebellum, and amygdala.
- Peripheral organs and tissues : These include the liver, lungs, kidneys, and intestines, where they influence various metabolic and physiological functions.
- Reproductive System : Present in the testicles and ovaries, where it can influence fertility and reproduction.
Cannabinoid Receptor Type 2 (CB2):
Discovered in : 1993.
Location : Mainly in immune system cells, spleen and hematopoietic cells.
Function : Involved in the modulation of immune response and inflammation.
- Immune System: Located in immune cells such as macrophages and B and T cells, where it modulates immune response and inflammation.
- Spleen : Contributes to the body's overall immune function.
- Hematopoietic Cells : In the bone marrow, where they influence the production of blood cells.

The distribution of these receptors in different parts of the body is why cannabinoids can have a variety of health effects, from pain relief to appetite regulation and immune response. These two receptors are the main and best known of the endocannabinoid system. Other receptors are thought to interact with cannabinoids, such as the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and the GPR55 receptor, but they are not yet strictly classified as cannabinoid receptors.
The discovery of these receptors and the study of their function has led to a deeper understanding of how certain components of the cannabis plant interact with the human body and has spurred research into potential cannabinoid-based medical therapies.
