CBD and Mitochondrial Health: Scientific Evidence and Mechanisms

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabis compound that has gained attention for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Because without properly functioning mitochondria, there isn't enough energy to sustain vital functions. Mitochondrial dysfunction is linked to multiple conditions, including:

Chronic fatigue and muscle weakness

Accelerated aging

Furthermore, mitochondria regulate apoptosis (programmed cell death), a fundamental process to prevent uncontrolled growth of damaged cells.

Therefore, strategies such as exercise, intermittent fasting, and certain compounds like CBD or NR (nicotinamide riboside) are being studied for their ability to protect and reactivate mitochondrial function.

  1. Hind et al. (2018) demonstrated in models of neurodegenerative disease that CBD significantly reduces oxidative stress and preserves mitochondrial integrity, leading to less apoptosis and better energy performance in affected cells.
  2. Choi et al. (2020) reported that in neuronal cultures, CBD protects against mitochondrial dysfunction induced by oxidative stress, improving ATP production and reducing programmed cell death.
  3. Silvestri et al. (2017) explored how cannabinoids can modulate mitochondrial dynamics, suggesting that CBD acts as a regulator of mitochondrial fusion and fission, crucial processes for the health and recycling of these structures.
  4. In a comprehensive review, Pisanti et al. (2017) concluded that the antioxidant properties of CBD could offer effective protection to mitochondria in various pathological contexts, which opens the door to its potential therapeutic use in diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.
  5. Zou & Kumar (2018) also addressed how the endocannabinoid system, in which CBD acts, influences the signaling and function of the central nervous system, highlighting the importance of these mechanisms in protection against mitochondrial damage and the regulation of the inflammatory response.

Although clinical evidence in humans is still limited, preclinical studies provide a solid basis for considering CBD as a potential modulator of mitochondrial health.
