What is skin cancer?

Skin cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the skin. There are different types of cancer that start in the skin. Skin color and sun exposure increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is a common form of skin cancer that develops in the squamous cells that make up the middle and outer layers of the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is usually not fatal, but it can be aggressive.

What are the symptoms of skin cancer?

According to the CDC.gov, the official website of the United States government,

A change in the skin is the most common sign of skin cancer. These changes may be a new lesion on the skin, a sore that won't heal, or a change in a mole. Not all skin cancers look the same.

For melanoma specifically, an easy way to remember the warning signs is to remember the first few letters of the alphabet.

1. Asymmetry: Is the mole or spot irregular in shape with two parts that look very different?
2. Borders: Are the edges jagged or jagged?
3. Color: Is the color uneven?
4. Diameter: Is the mole or spot bigger than a pea?
5. Evolution: Has the mole or spot changed or evolved in recent weeks or months?

Talk to your doctor if you notice any skin changes, such as the appearance of a new lesion, a sore that won't heal, a change in an old lesion, or any of the signs of melanoma described above.

What does the science say to this day about CBD and the treatment of skin cancer?

Research around the use of cannabidiol (CBD) in the treatment of skin cancer is at an early stage, but some preliminary research indicates that CBD could have a potential role in the treatment and prevention of skin cancer. Here are some studies and reviews that address this area:

1. " Cannabidiol enhances the apoptotic potential of TRAIL in cancer cells" by Ramer, R., Heinemann, K., Merkord, J., Rohde, H., Salamon, A. , Linnebacher, M., & Hinz, B. (2013). Although this study did not focus exclusively on skin cancer, it did find that CBD can enhance the ability of cancer cells to go through apoptosis, a process of programmed cell death that can prevent the spread of cancer.

2. " Anticancer effects of anandamide on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells via the production of receptor-independent reactive oxygen species " receptor-independent oxygen receptors) from Lee, CY, Wey, SP, Liao, MH, Hsu, WL, Wu, HY, & Jan, TR (2009). This study indicates that cannabinoids may have anti-cancer effects, but did not specifically focus on CBD or skin cancer.

3. " Cannabinoid receptors as novel targets for the treatment of melanoma" de Blázquez, C., Carracedo, A., Barrado, L., Real, PJ, Fernández-Luna, JL, Velasco, G., ... & Guzmán, M. (2006). This study suggests that cannabinoids could be effective in the treatment of melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer.
